After 2 days in Rotorua, one of which we spent entirely in their awesome public library so kids could catch up with studies, we left to visit Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland (it is really called this way!). It is an spectacular volcanic area with several colorful pools averaging 100°C temperatures (more than enough to boil an egg). We also got to see a geyser in eruption which was pretty cool. We met a nice couple from Oregon at the park which gave us several tips on Thailand and other places.
From Wai-O-Tapu, we left to Lake Taupo, a breathtaking lake surrounded by mountains. Taupo is a charming town with several cafes, good looking restaurants and bars. Best of it was that we could park overnight right in front of the lake and have a 5-star view from our campervan.
We spent half day at the Taupo library (we all agree that we now love libraries!) and then went to the Spa Park, which is located in Taupo and consists of mineral pools and waterfalls which are as warm as a hot tub.
We are about to close our stay in the North Island as Tuesday we get the ferry to the South Island from Wellington. But so far Lake Taupo is a winner!
