The Southern Alps

On our drive to get to the Southern Alps, we went through Punakaiki, on the West coast of NZ.  In Punakaiki, we visited the Pancake Rocks (they are really called this way) which are quite spectacular (see pictures below). To get there, it is a beautiful drive through Paparoa National Park. Too bad it was rainy but we managed to see the Pancake Rocks really well.

As we drive down the South Island, breathtaking mountains surround us from both sides. The Southern Alps! We drove through Arthur’s Pass National Park, where we had some fantastic and steep hikes to see a few waterfalls.  We spent the night free camping surrounded by the most impressive view we’ve had since we have been here. The best was waking up to a clear blue sky, finally the sun is shining in New Zealand!

After a quick stop at the Geraldine public library, we are now on our way to Mount Cook, located in the center of the South Island.
